The final cofferdam of China’s Three Gorges project has been demolished, meaning the scheme now begins its flood control purpose – two years ahead of schedule.

The 579m long, 140m high cofferdam was located on the southern bank of the Yangtze river and was demolished with enough explosives to bring down approximately 400 10-story buildings.

In May the last wall of the 18,200MW Three Gorges project was erected, and the scheme is scheduled to be fully operational in 2009.
