The exploration well 6407/1-6S is located in Rodriguez prospect in license PL475 on the Halten Terrace in the Norwegian Sea. It is situated 4km north-east of the Tyrihans field and 8km south-east of the Maria discovery.
Faroe is spudding the well with an objective to test oil in the middle Jurassic sandstones of the Garn, Ile and Tilje formations.
The company is planning to drill 6407/1-6S to a total depth of about 4,040m within the Tilje formation.
Faroe Petroleum chief executive Graham Stewart said the company is drilling the exploration well near its 2010 Maria oil discovery.
"This will be the last well to spud in our 2012 programme and we now look forward to an exciting 2013 programme with four important exploration wells scheduled to be drilled in Norwegian waters," Stewart added.
Wintershall Norge with 50% interest is the operator of the well and it is also responsible for the drilling program which is expected to take about 75 days.
Faroe Petroleum holds 30% interest in the well, whereas Centrica Resources owns 20% in it.
