The company had taken the unit off line on 10 September 2012 to perform significant upgrades and other necessary tasks.
During the outage, Exelon’s employees and about 2,200 supplemental workers performed over 14,000 activities, including safety inspections, tests, plant improvements and equipment upgrades.
The workers also upgraded cooling tower of Unit 1 of the nuclear power plant, which is located in Ogle County of Illinois, US.
Byron Generating Station site vice president Tim Tulon said, "The large amount of work completed will ensure the unit’s safe and reliable run through its next two-year operating cycle."
During the refueling outage of Unit 1, the Unit 2 continued to operate and generate electricity.
Located about 25 miles southwest of Rockford in Illinois, the station could produce nearly 2,300MW at full power, enough electricity for approximately 2.3 million houses in the region.
Exelon is a competitive US power generator with about 35,000MW of owned capacity. The company’s utilities deliver electricity and natural gas to over 6.6 million customers.
