Ethiopia is undertaking various feasibility studies aimed at fully utilising the resources of the Tekeze river basin. A previously prepared master plan shows that a sum of about US$7B is needed during the next 30 years to build 48 projects in the basin of the 608km long river.

The completion of these projects will bring considerable benefits to over 4.6M residents of northern Amhara and Tigray states, as well as develop hydro power. Design work is already under way on a hydro project that is expected to generate 890MW of hydroelectric power.
