Power company RWE has awarded a $328m contract to Erndtebruecker Eisenwerk and Bladt Industries to supply turbine foundations for the Gwynt y Mor wind farm, off the coast of North Wales.

The German-Danish group of companies will make 160 steel structures that support offshore wind turbines.

The foundations are scheduled to be delivered at the site later this year, and offshore work on the 576MW facility is likely to start by the end of 2011.

RWE claims that the plant, when complete, will generate power for about 400,000 homes annually.

RWE, Siemens and Stadtwerke Muenchen are investing in the plant, which will cost approximately EUR2bn to build.
