The German-owned utility is yet to receive government permission to build the plant. Reportedly, E.ON was competing with RWE npower and Scottish Power to get about GBP1 billion of government funding to fit the plant with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
A spokeswoman of E.ON said: “As a group, we remain committed to the development of cleaner coal and carbon capture and storage (CCS), which we believe have a key role to play alongside renewables, gas and nuclear, in tackling the global threat of climate change while ensuring affordability and security of energy supplies.”
Earlier in June, the company stated that due to the lack of government guidance on CCS and uncertainty caused by the global economic slowdown, it would not make any investment decision on the Kingsnorth plant until late 2010.
