Eni has announced its plans to undertake a renovation and recovery project at the Gela refinery located on the southern coast of Sicily in Italy.

The nearly €700m project is aimed at upgrading the heavy crude processing facility environmentally friendly and competitive to meet the challenges of the market.

Eni’s refinery project will upgrade the facility and enable it produce the products that are suited to the market requirements, such as diesel, gasoline, and polyethylene.

The company plans to turn the refinery into a technological hub through the recovery project.

It has plans to fully furnish the facility with new technologically modern systems, such as next-generation hydrocracking technology, new T-Sand catalyst to produce high quality diesel and a ‘zero waste’ system to generate energy from industrial waste.

In addition, the company will also continue with the research and development activities to produce third generation biofuels from algae.
