Pate-Cornell is considered a world leader in the engineering risk analysis and management, with specific applications linking to the NASA shuttle tiles, offshore oil platforms, and the US foreign intelligence.
Pate-Cornell holds a PhD in Engineering-Economic Systems and a Masters of Science in Operations Research from the Stanford University. She also received an MS degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from the Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble in France. She was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1995, and was a member of its Council from 2001 to 2007.
