The company said that the well encountered a net pay thickness between 40m to 70m of gas bearing sandstones at a depth of 3,720m.
The discovery confirms the geological model proposed for an unexplored area with potential for high hydrocarbon reserves.
Anadarko operates the Kronos-1 well, which is located in block Fuerte Sur, with 50% stake, while Ecopetrol holds the remaining.
The Kronos-1 well is being drilled using drillship Bolette Dolphin.
Ecopetrol president Juan Carlos Echeverry said: "This discovery adds to the one accomplished in December at the Orca-1 well, located in the deepwater of Tayrona block offshore Guajira, where we are partners with Petrobras, Repsol and Statoil.
"These results are very important and confirm the potential of the Colombian Caribbean petroleum system in a vast area and are aligned with Ecopetrol´s new strategy, in which one of the key areas is the exploration on high potential marine basins."
Ecopetrol and Anadarko are evaluating the Kronos discovery results.
Upon completion of Kronos-1 drilling, the drillship will be deployed at the Calasu-1 well in Fuerte Norte Block, approximately 100 miles north east of Kronos-1.
