US-based Duke Energy Renewables has completed the installation of a 36MW energy storage and power management system at the Notrees wind project.

The Dynamic Power Resource will help mitigate variability of wind power by storing excess wind energy and discharging it when required.

Duke Energy Renewables President Greg Wolf remarked that Battery storage system is an important element in addressing variability of generation in the wind and solar industries.

"Developing an expertise in this advanced technology will enable us to expand the use of renewable energy, better integrate it into the power grid and become even more efficient at serving our customers," added Wolf

The battery storage system was designed and installed by Texas-based Xtreme Power; the company will continue to handle its operations.

Installation of the system was partly-funded by a $22m from the US energy department.

Duke energy’s Notrees wind project has an installed capacity of 153MW and is located in the Ector and Winkler counties of western Texas.
