DTE Energy Company (DTE Energy) has appointed Anthony M Tocco as its chief compliance officer (CCO). In this role, Tocco is responsible for developing and implementing programs and processes to ensure compliance by DTE Energy and its subsidiaries with applicable laws and regulations. He has 19 years of compliance-related experience in the utility and energy industries. In 1989, Tocco joined the MCN Energy Group, the former parent company of DTE Energy subsidiary MichCon.

Compliance previously was overseen by Thomas A. Hughes, who recently retired as vice president and general counsel of Detroit Edison and MichCon, and associate general counsel and CCO of DTE Energy.

Tocco began his career at the U.S. Department of Defense in 1982, where he served as an accountant for the Tank and Automotive Command in Warren, Michigan and later as an auditor for the Defense Contract Audit Agency. While at MichCon, he held leadership positions of increasing responsibility in the audit and corporate security departments.

Prior to his new assignment, Tocco was director of enterprise compliance, responsible for the daily activities of the company’s Enterprise Compliance group. He also held the position of assistant general auditor and served as interim general auditor for DTE Energy. During this time, he directed the development and implementation of an independent centralized testing center for Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance and supporting corporate governance policies and procedures.

Tocco earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from the Detroit College of Business, a master’s of business administration from Wayne State University and a master’s of science degree in criminal justice security administration from the University of Detroit-Mercy. He is a certified compliance and ethics professional, a certified internal auditor and a certified fraud examiner.

Tocco is a member of the Ethics and Compliance Officer Association, the Society for Corporate Compliance and Ethics, the Compliance and Ethics Leadership Council, the Institute of Internal Auditors and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Tocco also is the current chairperson for the ethics and compliance officer Association’s Utility Industry Group, which is comprised of around 55 utility companies throughout the country.

Tocco resides in Royal Oak, Michigan.
