Dow has signed a supply agreement with Energias Renovaveis do Brasil (ERB), to invest, install and operate the biomass co-generation plant, which will use eucalyptus wood biomass to produce steam for the site’s chlor-alkali and chlorohydrin production processes.
The Aratu petrochemical production site, which currently receives all of its electricity from hydropower, will use the steam produced by the co-generation plant utilizing biomass for manufacturing materials for the automotive, building and industrial sectors.
Though this project, Dow expects to reduce the site’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 180,000 metric tons annually, and conserve 200,000 cubic meter of natural gas daily and also secure carbon credits through the CO2 emission savings.
Dow Chemical Company chairman and CEO Andrew Liveris said that Dow is focused on energy solutions that will unlock dramatic improvements in its energy profile as well as that of its customers and partners.
