GENERATION

The newly-appointed Union Minister for Power, Mr Suresh Prabhu, has announced the formulation of a comprehensive policy framework to double the installed power generation capacity to 200 GWe in a decade. Speaking in New Delhi on 4 October after assuming office, he said the policy would, “clearly state what we are going to do and what we want from the private players”.

The minister said that an inter-disciplinary committee would be formed within the ministry to go into the issues plaguing the sector in order to achieve the planned targets at the least cost. Upbeat on the passage of the Electricity Bill 2000, Prabhu said he would be seeking political consensus to enable the smooth passage of the proposed legislation in parliament.
