KNPP Station Director R S Sundar was quoted by the Press Trust of India as saying: "Next year in April-May the first phase of the work will begin. After that work for fifth and sixth units will begin. The setting up of third and fourth units will begin adjacent to the existing two units itself."
Russia’s nuclear power corporation Rosatom is the contractor for the project, which will consist of six nuclear power units.
India has signed a deal worth INR330bn ($5.2bn) with Russia to develop the third and fourth 1000MW units.
The first Block at the facility started operating in December 2014. It is the first unit to generate 1,000MW of nuclear power in India.
The second 1,000MW unit is undergoing the hot run process (release of steam into atmosphere), for which it had received approval from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. It is expected to be fully operational within six months.
The nuclear power units are part of the Indo-Russian deal to develop 12 nuclear plants by 2035.
