Bencai was quoted by Reuters as saying in an interview at CNPC’s Lima offices that the company is seeking potential opportunities in Peru aimed to either buy companies or to participate in the bidding of oil fields.

CNPC had already received an environmental permit from Peru to carry out exploratory work, worth $1bn, in a natural gas block acquired from Brazilian state-run oil company Petrobras.

The company is seeking more investment with major focus on a $4bn gas pipeline project in southern Peru, Bencai added.

"We are very interested in the southern pipeline," Bencai continued.

Natural gas will be transported through the pipeline from the Andean Camisea deposit to thermoelectric plants on Peru’s Pacific coast.

Without disclosing details Bencai said, "In Venezuela we are negotiating with the government for new blocks there."
