China’s official new agency Xinhua reports that State Grid Corporation of China intends to invest 4.3 billion yuan in extending its extra high voltage electricity transmission system this year.

According to SGCC, upon completion the planned extension will double the EHV transmission system’s capacity to 5GW and enable the transmission of at least 25 TWh of electricity annually.

Launched in January 2009, the EHV system has already transmitted 20.9 TWh of electricity between north China and central China power grids. In doing so it has eased the coal transportation burden and cut the consumption of coal for electricity generation by 2.55 million tonnes over the past two years.
