The loss of generated power was responsible for nationwide power supply cut on 29 November 2012, according to a statement by Dave Ifabiyi, TCN’s Public Affairs assistant general manager.
Ifabiyi noted TCN’s engineers had worked hard to rectify the problem and restored power supply by mid-night of the same day.
"The immediate cause of the power outage was a fault on 330kV Transmission Line from Benin to Onitsha which was aggravated by on-going work by Chevron Nigeria Ltd on its gas facility," the statement read.
"The Transmission Company of Nigeria sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused by the power outage and reassures all electricity consumers of its determination to continue to strengthen the Transmission grid for the Nation’s socio-economic growth."
As of now, Nigeria generates about 5,000MW of power, of which nearly 4,000MW is being moved to the national grid while others are shut in due to poor transmission infrastructure, according to Leadership.
