Construction of a 309MW natural-gas-fired power plant on the city’s Garrison industrial tract has commenced.

Norway-based heavy construction firm Kvaerner was selected by Calpine as a general contractor for the Garrison Energy Center.

The combined-cycle natural gas generating station is being built on part of a 400 acre industrial site off White Oak Road, reported delawareonline.

Kvaerner site manager Eugene Wiley Jr said the project, which is scheduled to complete in mid-2015, is progressing from its engineering phase to its building stages.

Wiley has informed Dover Council’s Utility Committee that workers will be surveying, setting up on-site headquarters and carrying out environmental impact preparations by June, following which work will begin on the plant’s foundations.

Wiley said he is likely to employ nearly 100 workers by the end of 2013 for the project.

Calpine has secured $2.5m in state funds to bring a high-capacity gas line six miles to the site.
