British Energy Group has reaffirmed the safety at Hinkley Point B power station after a recent inspection by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate that brought up the issue of core restraints.

The company has stated that it is fully aware of this issue and is dealing with it as part of the ongoing safe operation of the station. It has confirmed that this is not an issue that undermines the current safe operation of the station.

The company has prepared a safety justification that supports the continued functioning of the station. The issue is subject to the development of a long-term safety case and will form part of the company’s view on life extension of the station.

To date, the company has not found any issues that would rule out life extension. However, work continues and the company will make a formal decision before the end of this financial year.
