Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won a conract for setting up grid-interactive solar power plants with a total capacity of 1,100kW on turnkey basis in the Lakshadweep islands of India.

Valued at around INR350m ($7.89m), the order for the photovoltaic power plants at eight islands of Lakshadweep including the capital Kavaratti has been placed by Lakshadweep Administration.

In addition, the order envisages renovation of existing solar power plants with a total capacity of 800kW at these islands.

While all the new plants will be set up by May 2011, the renovation job will be completed progressively by February 2012, the company said.

BHEL is presently executing another turnkey contract for setting up a 3MW solar power plant in the Indian state of Karnataka for Karnataka Power Corporation.
