The commissioning is part of a contract with NTPC to set up three coal-fired units at the Bongaigaon facility.
Being developed at Salakati near Bongaigaon in Kokrajhar district, the power plant will source coal from Makum coal mines at Margherita, Assam and Eastern Coalfields (ECL).
The Bongaigaon facility is expected to be the highest rating coal-based power plant in Northeast India.
To date, Bhel has secured contracts to supply 251 generation sets of 250MW class.
