The power station is located on the right bank of the Meuse River in Tihange.
The 1000MW Tihange 3 reactor was closed automatically following an electrical fire on one of its transformers on Sunday. This is the fourth of seven reactors operated by France’s GDF Suez subsidiary Electrabel that went offline in Belgium.
Belgian news agency Belga quoted a company spokesman as saying the cause of the fire was a technical fault.
Reuters quoted Electrabel spokeswoman Elia as saying: "On Sunday morning, a fire happened at Electrabel’s high-voltage power station on the site of Tihange 3.
"Due to the fire, the generation unit was automatically disconnected from the grid."
The seven nuclear reactors, which include four in Doel near the northern city of Antwerp and three in Tihange with a total capacity of almost 6,000MW, caters to about 50% of electricity demand in Belgium.
Officials did not disclose the details on when the Tihange 3 would resume operations.
