Bechtel has been awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to replace three steam generators at Unit 2 of FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company’s (FENOC) Beaver Valley nuclear power station in Shippingport, Pennsylvania, US.

After completion, the Beaver Valley nuclear facility is expected to generate power for about one million homes and almost half of it will be produced by Unit 2, a pressurized water reactor generating 904MW of electricity.

Engineering work on the project is expected to start soon with full site mobilization, which is scheduled in late 2016, while generator replacement will be carried out in March 2017.

Prior to Unit 2, Bechtel has also replaced three steam generators at Beaver Valley Unit 1 in 2006.

Bechtel nuclear business line president Greg Ashley said the company has completed 34 steam generator replacements over the years.

"The replacement steam generators weigh approximately 370 tons and will require an experienced team to execute the work,"Ashley added.

Apart from the work at the Beaver Valley facility, Bechtel is currently replacing steam generators at FENOC’s Davis-Besse nuclear power station in Ohio.
