The new facility valued at over GBP17m, features advanced equipments including 17 polymer and optical sorters developed by manufacturers like Stadler, Titechand Herbold to process a diverse range of plastic feedstocks.
The new recycling facility, which has a flexible output of 11 different streams of plastic, ensuring that it is virtually zero-waste, is designed to create food-grade PET from recycled plastic that are claimed to be 68% less carbon-intensive than packaging made with virgin materials.
The company plans to expand the plant’s processing capacity to 140,000 tonnes by mid 2011, accounting for around 50% of the UK domestic market that is projected to recycle 300,000 tonnes of plastic bottles per annum by the end of 2010.
AWS Eco Plastics managing director Jonathan Short said that the inauguration of the recycling plant is the first step for AWS Eco Plastics, there is huge potential in the UK market and this can only grow as the demand for low-carbon food and drink packaging increases.
"This is a growth industry in which the UK has the potential to be a world-leader, a prime example of the Government’s low-carbon economy," Short said.
