The contract, with a commencement date of 1 January, 2013 allows for haulage of 4.2 million tons of coal per annum via the northern missing link Goonyella to Abbot Point expansion project which will connect the Newlands and Goonyella coal systems.
Asciano managing director and CEO John Mullen said the company is extremely pleased to sign the contract with BHP, which is a valued customer of its Pacific National coal haulage business in Queensland.
"Asciano is offering an innovative and flexible rail haulage approach the opportunity for tonnage through the newly expanded port of Abbot Point innovative operational solution and contract that," Mullen said.
On winning the contract, the two diesel powered trains will maintained at the Asciano’s Nebo heavy maintenance facility, Mullen added.
The project is scheduled to be complete in early 2012.
