The recent move, which follows an agreement signed between the parties in October 2008 for joint exploration of the zone, is expected to pave the way for a long-term partnership between Areva and JAEC in the development of the kingdom’s nuclear power generation program.

Following the mining agreement, Areva will have the right to mine the deposit for 25 years and pursue its current exploration activities launched one year ago.

The company will also carry out a feasibility study covering economical, environmental and technical aspects of the project prior to commencing production. A portion of the uranium produced by the future mine would serve Jordan’s nuclear energy program.

Anne Lauvergeon, CEO of Areva, said: “This agreement strengthens our ties with Jordan. It illustrates the exemplary cooperation between Areva and the kingdom of Jordan in the development of a civilian nuclear capability in the country.”
