Power technologies company American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) has won an order worth more than $10m from South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co to supply wind turbine electrical control systems.

The systems, which will be used in Doosan’s onshore and offshore 3MW full conversion wind turbines, are expected to be delivered between mid-2011 and mid-2012.

AMSC founder and CEO Greg Yurek said that with the offshore wind market in Asia now entering a phase of rapid growth, AMSC expects multi-megawatt wind energy systems such as Doosan’s WinDS3000 will be in increasingly high demand.

The 3MW pilot model of Doosan has been in operation at Korea’s Jeju Island since October 2009.

South Korea announced a new $10.5bn project in November 2010 to develop 2.5GW of offshore wind resources.
