The contract requires AMSC to install the D-VAR STATCOM system in Ergon’s St George substation for monitoring the power grid and automatically stabilizing voltage to enable higher power transfer through existing power lines with increased reliability and efficiency.
AMSC’s D-VAR system, which has been provided to Ergon, will also be utilized to interconnect sources of renewable energy to power grids, and will have a continuous rating of 20 mega-volt-amperes reactive (MVAR) capacitive and 5MVAR inductive compensation.
D-VAR systems are static compensators, a member of the Flexible AC-Transmission System family of power electronic systems for AC power grids that can detect and instantly compensate for voltage disturbances by injecting leading or lagging reactive power into the power grid.
AMSC, which will provide installation and ongoing maintenance and support for D-VAR system, will commission this intelligent grid system early in calendar year 2012 to support wide-spread application of technologies like Advanced Metering Infrastructure and plug-in electric vehicles.
