The new unit will have an electrical output of over 900MW and will supply 25% of the Rhein-Neckar region’s electricity, the equivalent of approximately 600,000 households. It will replace the existing units 3 and 4 (with an output of only 220MW each), which will be taken out of service after the commissioning of the new unit in 2013.
Grosskraftwerk Mannheim is a coal-fired cogeneration plant with an installed base of 1675MW which produces up to 1000MW of heat as well as electricity, and has been supplying both heat and power to the region for over 85 years.
As reported, the new unit will use less coal, reducing the power plant’s overall CO2 emissions by about one million tonnes per year and conforming to the objectives of the German government, with a focus on reducing the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Guy Chardon, senior vice president of thermal products at Alstom Power, said: “Innovative technology such as that installed at Mannheim 9 is essential for reducing CO2 emissions in our customers’ coal-fired plants and we look forward to further supporting the implementation of cleaner power generation on the German market”.
