The synchronous condensers, which will be delivered as part of ECA consortium comprising Alstom, Alba Costruzioni and Boffetti, are scheduled to be commissioned in December 2015.

Under the contract, Alstom will construct two synchronous grid compensation plants based on Alstom TOPAIR technology (air-cooled turbogenerator) in Partinico and Favara in Italy.
The condensers can supply reactive power into the grid, compensating fluctuations and ensuring grid stability for the customer.
Alstom will also provide step-up transformer, generator, control system, bus duct and the generator circuit breaker for each plant.
The project marks a major milestone in the development of integrated smart grid solutions, integrating renewable energy sources in the grid and ensuring grid stability for the customer, Alstom claimed.
