Under the contract, Alstom will engineer and commission a set of generator, inter-connecting, and station transformers up to 200MVA, 80MVAR reactor and associated equipment.

Being developed by Neyveli Lignite, the 2X500MW thermal project will be the first lignite-fired power plant in the country.

Alstom plans to engineer and manufacture all the equipment for the project at its facilities in India.

Alstom T&D India managing director Rathin Basu said: "The Neyveli project is a significant project considering the crucial role it will play in improving the power situation in the southern region of the country.

"We have achieved the remarkable feat of being the only Indian company to have over four years’ experience in manufacturing of 765kV transformers and reactors with localized technology and also supply of more than 200 units of 765kV transformers and shunt reactors.

"Our extensive manufacturing footprint, resources and capabilities will be mobilized to make this project a success."

Essar Projects was selected to manage engineering and construction works on the Neyveli project.

Earlier, Alstom T&D India and Essar have collaborated on various projects, including e-BOP package of 2x600MW Salaya, 2x600MW Mahan and 4x30MW Paradeep.
