INDIA’S DAMODAR VALLEY Corporation (DVC) has awarded a contract to alstom Power India for the refurbishment of its existing 60MW (3x320MW) capacity Maithon hydro power project, located near Asanol in West Bengal. After refurbishment, the capacity of each unit will be 23.8MW.
According to Alstom sources, the order worth US$6.3M will be executed jointly by Alstom Power UK and Alstom Power India. The scope of work includes uprating the existing turbine generator unit capacity by 15% and that of the associated equipment.
As per the contract, Alstom Power India will supply electrical and mech-anical equipment, while Alstom Power UK will supply turbine component controls and overall project management.
The order is claimed to have added another facet to Alstom Power’s hydro operations in India, apart from those being executed for large hydro jobs like Dhauliganga, and mini hydro projects like Relagarh and Sobla of Utta Proadesh Loghu Jal Vidyut Nigam.
The order also reflects Alstom’s focus to target projects where the units were originally supplied by the Alstom Group. According to sources, this also taps into the vast potential for increasing power generation capacities with minimum investment while yielding additional revenue to the utilities.
