The platform is located at Nordic Yards-operated Warnemüde shipyard in Germany.

The German-Dutch transmission system operator TenneT awarded the project to Alstom in February 2013.

The project, which is expected to cost over €1bn, will link the North Sea wind farms to the mainland supergrid. It is the eighth grid link project to be undertaken by TenneT using direct current technology.

Alstom designed and manufactured the transformers for the project at its Mönchengladbach facility in Germany. Each unit weighs around 500t each and will support uninterrupted transmission of electricity from the converter platform.

The company said the transformers have been installed in specially designed rooms with corrosion protection to guard them against harsh offshore climate conditions.

Alstom Grid vice president for Central & Eastern Europe and Russia Gerhard Seyrling said: "The two power transformers are core components of the DolWin 3 offshore converter platform."

TenneT Offshore management member Wilfried Breuer said: "With the grid connection DolWin3, we will provide a total of about 7,000 MW connectivity in the North Sea, transporting offshore wind power to the shore. This is equivalent to the supply of about nine million households with green energy.

"The German government´s offshore-expansion target for the North Sea and the Baltic Sea of 6,500 MW until 2020 will be fulfilled early."
