AES and Mitsubishi will own the energy storage system, which will be supplied by Fluence. The solution will be installed in Rohini, Delhi at a substation that is operated by Tata Power-DDL.
The project is expected to be completed later this year and it will be able to offer better peak load management, add system flexibility and enhance reliability for over 7 million customers in the Delhi region.
Fluence, the energy storage company owned by Siemens and AES will deliver its Advancion technology platform for the project. Tata Power-DDL and its customers are expected to benefit from the Advancion energy storage system, which is claimed to be designed for long-term dependability.
AES’ Eurasia strategic business unit president Mark Green said: “The deployment of cutting-edge energy storage technology in India shows the commitment we have to the country. Adding Fluence’s Advancion energy storage solution will allow us to continue to contribute to the modernization and enhancement of the electricity system in India.”
The project is expected to be of significant importance for India, as the country is experiencing remarkable growth in renewable energy with a target to install 175GW of solar and wind generation by 2022.
Tata Power-DDL CEO and managing director Praveer Sinha said: “The first of its kind system will help to create a business case for the deployment of storage in India, to address challenges in the areas of peak load management, system flexibility, frequency regulation and reliability on the network.
“This project will provide a platform to demonstrate energy storage as a critical distribution asset and help to balance distributed energy resources, including rooftop solar.”
