American Electric Power (AEP), a US based electric utility, said that it will accelerate the construction process of a natural gas-fired power plant near Dresden, Ohio.

The company purchased the partially constructed power plant in 2007 from Dresden Energy and the project is expected to be operational during the first quarter of 2012.

When completed, the power plant will be a nominal 580MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle facility, AEP said.

AEP chairman and CEO Michael Morris said that the completion of the Dresden plant will provide AEP the most cost-effective solution to meet its customers’ energy needs.

"The Dresden plant will help meet the growth in demand in our eastern states and continue to improve our environmental profile while adding job growth to the region," Morris said.
