Power and automation technology group ABB has secured a $45m order from US-based utility Oncor to provide electrical solutions.

The company will design, supply, install and commission one static var compensator (SVC) and two series compensators (SCs), which will facilitate the development of smarter grids and assist in integration of renewable power in the state of Texas.

ABB Power Systems division head Brice Koch said "ABB has a strong track record of delivering environmentally friendly SVC and SC solutions around the world and we have a large installed base in the US, having executed several similar projects for Oncor."

SVCs and SCs are part of ABB’s family of flexible alternating current transmission systems technologies, which will be included into the state of Texas’ competitive renewable energy zones (CREZ) program.

The CREZ program intends to increase the contribution of renewable energy in the state by up to 18GW.

Oncor operates 190,000km of transmission and distribution lines and serves more than seven million customers in Texas.
