The contract with Dong Energy will see ABB design, manufacture, supply and commission the 220kV alternating current (AC) extruded cable system.
The extension project is located about 19km off the English east coast, next to the 367MW Walney offshore wind farm.
The existing wind farm is sited 15km west of Walney Island off the coast of Cumbria in the Irish Sea.
Covering an area of about 149km², the extension project will be developed in two phases, each with a capacity of 330MW.
The link includes over 157km of submarine cable to link the two wind farm platforms to each other and to shore, as well as 24km of underground cable for the grid connection.
ABB power systems division president Claudio Facchin said: "The Walney Extension cable link will help deliver clean renewable power to more than a million people."
After completion, both the Walney wind farms will generate enough electricity for more than 800,000 households.
The wind farms will contribute to the UK’s goal of achieving 15% of its total energy production from renewable sources by 2020.
Dong Energy has selected Siemens as preferred supplier for delivery of 7MW wind turbine for the second phase of the Walney Extension project.
Earlier in 2015, the company has selected MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as its preferred supplier for delivery of 8MW turbine for the first phase of the project.
