CERN has started operating the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the frontier of high energy particle physics.

ABB will supply vacuum cast coil dry-type distribution transformers with power ratings of up to 12,000kV-amperes (kVA) to replace existing ones at CERN to power the LHC.

ABB transformers business global head Tarak Mehta said that low losses, high efficiency and minimized operational costs were critical factors in CERN’s decision to choose ABB’s transformers.

The company has previously supplied CERN with three 2,500kVA dry-type transformers, which have already been installed at the Geneva site as part of another project.
