Kvaerner is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the Norske Shell’s Nyhamna gas processing facility expansion project, which is currently underway.
Under the $24m contract, ABB will supply its SVC to improve efficiency and increase uptime.
ABB’s process automation and power systems divisions in Norway and Sweden are working together on the design of SVCs and system integration.
The SVC compensates for power fluctuations of the grid by allowing more electricity to flow through the network.
ABB process automation president Peter Terwiesch said: "The tailor-made SVC will decrease reactive power consumption and stabilize voltage for gas compressors at the new Nyhamna facility.
"In line with our Next Level strategy, we will use our technology strengths and combined power and automation expertise to deliver this important project for Kvaerner."
Located about 50km south of Kristiansund, the Nyhamna plant meets about 20% of gas needs in the UK.
The expansion project is expected to increase the capacity of the plant from current 70 million cubic meters of gas per day to 84 million.
ABB has previosuly delivered the 800xA safety and automation system for the Nyhamna plant.
