The company said the HVDC light back-to-back converter station, which will be situated in Bentwisch in Northern Germany, is the first of its kind in Europe.
The contract with transmission system operators Energinet.dk in Denmark and 50Hertz Transmission in Germany requires ABB to deliver the complete HVDC station, including transformers, converter valves, cooling systems, control and protection and other related equipment.
The converter will enable the connection of the asynchronous AC power grids of Eastern Denmark and Germany. It will be part of the Kriegers Flak combined grid solution project.
Upon completion, the interconnector will be capable of generating 400MW of energy, equal to power over 400,000 homes.
The project will establish an offshore interconnection using the national grid links to the future Danish 600MW Kriegers Flak and operating German 50MW Baltic 1 and 288MW Baltic 2 offshore wind farms.
ABB power grids division president Claudio Facchin said: "The integration of renewable energy and the development of interconnections are key elements of ABB’s Next Level Strategy, addressing the growing need for electricity with minimum environmental impact."
ABB already has an experience of installing more than 100 HVDC projects, representing a total installed capacity of over 120,000MW and accounting for nearly half the worldwide installed base.
