The order was placed by the plant’s developers, South African construction company WBHO and renewable energy developer Building Energy.
As per the contract, ABB will undertake the design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the project.
The contract also includes the supply of power products such as medium- and low-voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, and control and protection devices, along with distributed automation and control products from the Symphony Plus range.
ABB Power Systems division head Brice Koch noted: "We have a strong track record in delivering turnkey power and automation solutions that are optimizing photovoltaic power plants all over the world."
Following the completion of the the Kathu PV plant, scheduled in 2014, it is estimated to generate 146GWh solar power meeting energy requirement of 40,000 people.
The plant is being developed under South Africa’s renewable energy program which is aimed at diversifying the country’s energy sources, and reducing its carbon footprint.
