Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, known as Masdar, has entered into a strategic agreement with Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna to develop renewable energy and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Kazakhstan. The collaboration was formalised during the official visit of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, to Kazakhstan.

The agreement outlines the development of a ’24/7′ renewable energy initiative, providing up to 500MW of baseload power, alongside BESS projects with a capacity of up to 2GW. This partnership is aligned with Kazakhstan’s renewable energy goals, with the country targeting 15% of its electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030 and 50% by 2050.

The event also marked the announcement of the ratification of an Intergovernmental Agreement between the UAE and Kazakhstan, facilitating the development of Masdar’s 1GW wind farm in Kazakhstan.

Masdar’s has already partnered with W Solar and Qazaq Green Power, a Samruk-Kazyna Group company, to advance the 1GW wind project. The power purchase and investment agreements were finalised last year at COP29 in Baku, with construction anticipated to commence in 2026.

UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Masdar chairman Dr Sultan Al Jaber said: “By leveraging Masdar’s expertise in renewables and battery storage technology, Kazakhstan will be able to address today’s energy needs while creating new jobs, stimulating its economy and preparing for the growing demands of tomorrow.

“We look forward to working closely with Samruk-Kazyna and the Government of Kazakhstan to deliver sustainable, secure energy and drive socioeconomic progress.”

The collaboration underscores Central Asia’s strategic importance for Masdar, which is expanding its renewable energy footprint across the region, including in Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. The company aims to achieve a global portfolio capacity of 100GW by 2030.

Last month, Masdar has completed its acquisition of Greece’s Terna Energy to strengthen its presence in Europe.
