The New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) chief executive officer says the utility is preparing to meet the challenges of a competitive electric industry. NYPA has taken to improve its position by modernising its large hydroelectric power projects on the Niagara and St Lawrence rivers.

The utility is obtaining a new federal licence for the St Lawrence-Franklin D Roosevelt project and has begun planning for relicensing of the Niagara facility. The current licences expire in 2003 and 2007, respectively.
