Under the NOK1bn ($121m) contract, Kvaerner will be responsible for providing engineering, fabrication and construction services for the steel jacket for the processing platform.

Kvaerner will build the 17,700t jacket would at the yard in Verdal followed by installation on the Johan Sverdrup field in 2018.

The company will undertake engineering activities at its offices in Oslo, while the project management will be based at the company’s facility for complex jackets in Verdal.

Johan Sverdrup development project senior vice president Kjetel Digre said: "This is the third delivery based on the letter of intent signed by Statoil and Kvaerner for delivery of jackets.

"This means that Kvaerner will deliver three of four jackets for the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup development."

Additionally, Dragados Offshore will also provide engineering, fabrication and construction of the 7,600t steel jacket for the Johan Sverdrup utility as well as accommodation platform, as part of the contract.

The jacket is planned to be built at the yard in Cadiz and is expected to be installed in 2018.

Statoil estimates the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup development to have recoverable resources in the range of 1.4 to 2.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

The NOK117bn ($14.18bn) first phase involves installation a utility and accommodation platform, a processing platform, a drilling platform and a riser platform in addition to three subsea water injection templates.

Statoil operates the Johan Sverdrup development project with 40.0267% while other partners include Lundin Norway with 22.6% stake, Petoro 17.36%, Det norske oljeselskap 11.5733% and Maersk Oil 8.44%.
