Planned to be built at the Red Rock Reservoir on the Des Moines River, RRHP will be a retrofit of the current dam, which is owned and maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
The project will be capable of generating about 55MW of energy for an estimated 18,000 homes and businesses.
Voith Hydro is delivering the turbines, generators and associated controls for the project, which is expected to be completed in 2018.
The company is also delivering two vertical Kaplan type turbines and the control systems including static exciters, digital governors, and unit and plant controls for the project.
Voith Hydro sales and marketing director Carl Atkinson said: "By harnessing renewable energy at a previously non-powered Army Corps of Engineers dam, RRHP is providing a strong example for future development of our water resources."
Upon completion, the plant will be the second-largest hydropower facility in Iowa.
The project will provide clean power to Missouri River Energy Services’ 61 municipal customers in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
