A new independent water and power plant (IWPP) will use Qatar’s natural gas resources to generate 2,520MW of energy and desalination capacity of about 600 million liters of water a day.
It will help deliver drinking water and electricity to one of the economic zones that form part of Qatar’s modernization plans.
Under the deal requires ABB to design, engineer, supply, install and commission three substations that will be used to feed the grid and later step down power for distribution along the new proposed development areas.
The 400kV and 220/132kV substations will incorporate gas-insulated switchgear as well as advanced control and protection and telecommunication systems.
ABB Power Systems division president Claudio Facchin said: "We have an extensive presence and track-record in the region and are pleased to contribute to Qatar’s efforts to expand capacity and address the growing demand for electricity and fresh water."
Qatar’s infrastructure plans include building rail, energy and water desalination plants. The experience of ABB will help prepare the country’s economy to serve the increasing population.
