EPA has spent approximately $320,000 on the cleanup, which it will try to recover from the potentially responsible businesses, removing approximately 250 compressed gas cylinders and 60 drums and other containers.
The cylinders recovered from the site were originally owned by Environmental Technical Services, which was formerly located on Revlon Drive in Belvidere and is believed to have transported the containers to the site when it went out of business in 2003.
While EPA has sent more than 90 different known or suspected chemicals found at the site to facilities engaged in hazardous waste disposal, other contaminants included waste oil, 760 gallons of flammable liquids and contaminated soil that has been excavated and transported for disposal.
Although EPA has removed the drums and containers from the site located near residential homes and a school, some environmental issues remain, including petroleum contamination, however tests of local wells did not show any contamination of drinking water.
