London Array Wind Farm begins production

The wind farm, which is expected to become the world’s largest, is being built in two phases. The first phase will have a capacity of 630MW with 175 turbines installed over 90km2. The work on the project began in 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

Production from the first phase will be enough to power over 470,000 UK homes.

The second phase, if approved, will have a capacity of 240MW, bringing the total capacity of the wind farm to 870MW. The wind farm will spread over 245km2 with the second phase included.

The wind farm is owned by a consortium of Dong Energy, E.ON and Masdar. Dong holds 50%, E.ON 30% and Masdar 20% in the project.

Masdar CEO Sultan Al Jaber said: "The London Array development is an example of the true potential and commercial viability of renewable energy."

Dong Energy Wind UK country manager Benj Sykes said, "With its 630MW the London Array project will be the first of the next generation of larger offshore wind farms and we are pleased to have reached first power."
