This new addition to MGE’s existing fleet, which includes another hybrid type unit, will be used for overhead maintenance and line construction and will be monitored by the MGE with a mobile tracking system to gage fuel savings, estimated at around 55%.
While driving, the Odyne plug-in hybrid system uses an electric motor parallel to the existing drive train that provides launch assist and regenerative braking, to increase fuel efficiency. At jobsite, the workers can use the hybrid plug-in system to operate worksite applications and avoid using engine power.
The Odyne system can be configured to have a certain type of chassis, fuel type or vehicle application without making any changes to an OEM engine or transmission and can be used on many work truck platforms, including bucket trucks, digger derricks or air compressor trucks.
On behalf of Madison Gas & Electric, Tom Brice said that the Odyne system was certified by third-party testing and the IRS for a 54% reduction in fuel consumption, so it is looking forward to seeing the actual numbers on the working unit.
