Under this contract, Ameresco has developed a strategic plan to cut energy use and operating costs at NARA’s flagship Archives I and Archives II facilities in Washington, D.C. and College Park, Maryland and will make energy infrastructure improvements at 13 Presidential Libraries across the US.
Ameresco has conducted an in-depth review of Archives II facility systems, and has then recommended measures that would reduce energy use and operating costs by upgrading the infrastructure, and addressing building-specific operational issues.
The $5.9m project comprises energy management control improvements including energy efficient motors and filtration systems, updated HVAC and lighting systems, water conservation initiatives, and a solar roof installation and is expected to yield almost $1m in savings annually.
NARA has already completed three phases with Ameresco to design and install over 104kW of roof mounted PV arrays at multiple locations and has a new white roof with 26kW of solar PV under construction as a prototype for future roof replacements.
National Archives director of facilities and personal property management division Mark Sprouse said that NARA prides itself on being a leader in operational efficiency and energy conservation at all of its facilities.
